Obituary of Edna Gilbert

MARGARET GILBERT (1920-2011)

Edna Margaret Gilbert was born on the family farm at Big Bend (near Wiley) Colorado June 1, 1920 to Robert and Edna Sterrett. She passed away at the Kremmling Memorial Hospital December 31, 2011 after a long illness.

She was a graduate of Las Animas High School and Blair Business College in Colorado Springs. While working in Colorado Springs during WWII, she met her husband Paul Gilbert who was serving in the Army Air Corps at Fort Carson. They were married in St. Louis, Missouri on April 9, 1945.

They returned to Colorado after the war and Paul resumed his career with the Colorado Game & Fish Department, first in Montrose, then Middle Park in 1950. It was a place they loved and never left. Margaret worked in Hot Sulphur Springs for Smithson's Café and the US Post Office. In 1966 she began working for the Grand County Treasurer's Office and was appointed Grand County Treasurer in 1972. She was re-elected in 1974 and served as Treasurer until her retirement in 1978. After retirement, Margaret and Paul traveled throughout Colorado and the southwest in their VW camper exploring prehistoric cultures and enjoying the scenery. Margaret was also a member of the Timberline Tramps, trekking with good friends and learning the botany of this area with their guide, and her husband, Paul.

Margaret had two boys: James R. (Crick) Gilbert and Paul T. (Tim) Gilbert. Crick is a retired professor in Winterport, Maine, married to Donna. Tim lives in Grand Lake with his wife Karen.

Margaret was predeceased by Paul in 2008 after 63 years of marriage. In addition to Paul, her younger sister, Florence Cornelius, and her parents preceded her in death.

Margaret leaves three grandsons, a granddaughter and one great grandson.

Guestbook

Sorry to hear of the loss of Margaret. Paul & Margaret were so special to our family. They were like a 3rd pair of grandparents to our children, Stacy & Kevin. Paul & Margaret always included us in everything they did. We were very fortunate to be able to spend over 2 1/2 years living in the "apartment" below them. They were very loving to us always. I will truly miss them. As ever, Love, Willie Travnicek

My memories of Margaret (Mrs. Gilbert to me) run deep as her son Tim was a close friend from Kindergarten through high school. She and Paul were significant influences in the lives of the many young boys they shepherded over the years in Cub and Boy Scouts. My mother, Marguerite Clift (Blouch) served with Margaret at the County Court House in Sulphur for a number of years, Mom as the District and County Court Clerk and Margaret in the Treasurer's Office. Their place at the west end of Byers Canyon, out on the point, holds many memories for me and no doubt many others, as it became a place of great adventure and sort of a home away from home. She always made visitors feel welcome and I remember her warmly. She and Paul were a significant part of the fabric of Grand County and my hope is that their influence will never be forgotten. It's certainly won't be in my life. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family as they obviously will miss Margaret's earthy presence.
