Lois Marie (Moore) Clayton July 7, 1933 - July 3, 2012





Long time Grand County resident Lois Clayton passed away in her home on July 3, 2012.


Lois Marie (Moore) Clayton was born in St. Louis, Mo in 1933 to Emmett and Janice Moore. Lois moved to Grand County in 1940. She grew up on the family ranch between Granby and Grand Lake with her two brothers, Jim and Emmett Moore and her Grandmother Rebecca Grubb. She attended elementary school at the Knight school which was located in the valley where Lake Granby is now. She graduated from Middle Park Union High School in Granby in 1951. Lois attended nursing school at St Lukes Hospital in Denver.


As a young girl Lois worked for the Colorado Game and Fish and for several ranches around the Grand Lake area helping train horses and haying in the fall. She was the Granby Rodeo Queen in 1948. She worked in Granby as a nurse for Dr. Ogden, as a telephone operator and at the El Grande Theater. She was a member of the Ladies VFW.


She married George Clifford Clayton in 1953 and they made their home in Fraser. Lois worked for Chuck and Elsie Clayton at Clayton's Café in Fraser for many years. She worked at the Idelwild Ski Area in 1972-74.


Lois went to work for Winter Park Ski Area in 1974 as a Security officer. She retired from Winter Park in 1999 after 25 years of service.


In her retirement she enjoyed long treks through the woods with her dogs and would often walk as much as 40 miles a week. She also enjoyed taking drives in the woods, her favorite was the road to Mount Nystrom. She also enjoyed working in her yard and talking to the many friends that would often stop to visit.


Lois is survived by her children Cristie (Pat) Taylor, Alan (Brenda) Clayton, Cheri (Billy) Sanders. Brothers, Emmett Moore, Russell Wadlow and Duane Wadlow. Grandchildren Jennifer Harthun, Jodi Clayton, Jeff Clayton, Cody Clayton, Cori Armstrong, Brittany and Kindra Kitzenburger and Cassidy Henderhan She is also survived by 9 great grandchildren, Breckin, Jez Marie, Morgan, William, Forrest, Ramyius, Tom, Lauren and Cole as well as many nieces and nephews and many, many friends.





A memorial service will be held in Fraser in August.
